What do you find when you open your closet? A mountain of clutter? A messy closet is a tasking challenge but organizing it is no impossible feat. Here are 15 tired and tested tricks to transform your closet:
1. Create a closet.
Don’t have a “real closet” in your home? Well, the solution is simple! You can make one yourself. All you need is another room. Install storage spaces like wall racks and hangers, and place a floor length mirror to give it that “real closet” feel.
Get rid of items you no longer use. Set aside a day to clean out your closet. Gather clothes, apparel and other items you do not use in a box and donate them to charity. Not only will you feel good that your closet is finally clean, you will also feel great for helping others.
3. Arrange items according to use.
Store items you frequently use on compartments or racks at eye level. On the other hand, items you use less frequently should be stored below or up high.
4. Combine storage units.
To meet your different needs, combine a variety of storage units. Use drawers for folded items, hangers for dresses and suits, and boxes or baskets for odds and ends.
5. Use an umbrella stand.
An umbrella stand can be used for purposes other than holding umbrellas. It can also be used inside your closet to hold hard-to-store items like yoga mats.
6. Organize your shoes.
Don’t just put your shoes on the floor or in the same compartment as your clothes. Use boxes, cubbies, hanging organizers or tiered shelves like the one in the picture.
7. Place items on shelf dividers.
Towels are bulky and can take up space in your closet. To keep them neatly organized, use a shelf divider like the one in the picture. You may also use shelf dividers with folded clothes or accessories.
8. Add lights!
A well-lighted closet space appears better and bigger. Plus, with more lights, you can see your stored items better allowing you to reach for them easily and quickly.
9. Replace doors with curtains.
This idea is great if you live in small spaces like an apartment. To conserve space, use curtains or hanging screens instead of traditional closet doors that swing out.
10. Use laundry baskets.
Rubbermaid offers stackable laundry baskets which are perfect for easy and quick sorting. They allow you to save up on space too. They are easy to carry to the washing machine and can be used to store odds and ends, too.
11. Install hooks.
Hooks are tiny closet miracles that can make a huge difference! Installing just a few pieces for your jackets and clothes can give you extra storage space.
12. Decorate your closet.
Many of us pay little attention to our closets. We do not show guests our closets anyway. However, keeping your closet in shape can motivate you to keep it clean at all times. Treat it like a small room. Add décor and paint it with a color you prefer.
13. “Hide” items under your bed.
Just like when you were a kid, you can “hide” items under your bed to maximize closet space. But don’t throw your clothes under your bed and “hide” a pile of mess down there. Make more room in your closet by placing boxes or baskets under your bed.
14. Group your clothes according to color.
Color coding is a great organization trick that works well with clothes. To avoid wasting your time looking for clothes to wear, group them according to color. This should help you find things easier.
15. Repurpose storage piece.
Use standard storage pieces creatively. Take some inspiration from the photo. Use a trunk to store off-the-season clothes and place a cushion on top for seating. Throw in some cloth baskets too for extra storage space.
